REALTORS® Making a Difference: $10,000 Raised for Okanagan Hospice and Kelowna Women’s Shelter
Kelowna, BC – Despite a slowdown in the pace of home sales in the Central Okanagan, the community spirit of local REALTORS® is undeterred. The members of the Okanagan Mainline Real Estate Board’s Central Zone have raised $10,000 to benefit the local hospice and women’s shelter.
The Central Zone Committee recently donated $5,000 each to the Central Okanagan Hospice Association and to the Kelowna Women’s Shelter – the Zone’s two selected charities. The donations are the result of fundraising efforts of the REALTORS® of OMREB’s Central Zone during the 2011 Christmas luncheon and silent auction.
“We consider our local fundraising efforts a great success in a year with so much uncertainty – especially when the need for financial assistance is so great. It is good to see that as a community we are still able to lend a hand to those less fortunate,” says Deborah Moore who manages the Charities and REALTORS® Care portfolio for the Zone. “We would like to thank all of our REALTOR® Members and business partners for their participation. Without their generous support, this donation would not be possible.”
The Central Okanagan Hospice Association provides palliative care programs including community care, residential care, hospice care and acute care to those suffering with cancer and assists their families. The monies presented will go towards volunteer training for the palliative team of 250 volunteers who offer support to the terminally ill and their families in long term care facilities, the hospital, and their own homes, as well as at Hospice House.
The Kelowna Women’s Shelter has offered a safe refuge for women and children faced with family violence for the past 31 years and notes that one in three women will experience abuse at some point during their life time. The Shelter provides housing and support, crisis management, child care and counseling for children, as well as community education and outreach programs. The donation to the Kelowna Women’s Shelter has been earmarked for the Shelter’s public awareness campaign on Castanet.
Deborah adds that, “This year, Central Zone REALTOR® Members will also be painting the interior of the Shelter Thrift Store in April, and volunteering to build a gazebo and spring clean the Shelter residence in May.”
“We are proud to showcase our REALTORS’® commitment to enhancing the ‘Quality of Life’ in the communities we live and work in as our members give of their time, money and expertise,” says OMREB President Rob Shaw.
The Okanagan Mainline Real Estate Board (OMREB) is comprised of 1,080 member REALTORS® and 90 real estate offices in the Southern Interior of BC. The Central Zone of OMREB covers an area from Peachland to Lake Country and east along Highway 33 to Westbridge (including the Christian Valley).
